Investigation of the impact of front glass properties to the electrical performance of a-Si/uc-Si tandem cells by numerical simulation

Abstract: The scope of the present work is to investigate the impact of front glass properties to the electrical performance of aSi/ucSi tandem cells. For this reason, we perform numerical simulations of thin-film tandem cells consisted of amorphous and microcrystalline silicon, with various glass types (low-iron and “green” glass) and thicknesses. For each type and thickness of glass, the tandem cell was simulated using geometrical ray tracing models (Atlas Silvaco), in terms of electrical and optical performance, and evaluated. It is shown that for the low-iron front glass, the electrical performance of the cell has little effect on the thickness of glass. On the contrary, when “green” glass is used as front glass, the device performance is significantly improved for reduced glass thickness.
