Dr Nestoridi, Battery Expert Technical Officer of European Space Agency (ESA), explains how the ESA funded Project “High Specific Energy Lithium Ion Cells for Space Exploration” broke the low temperature barrier at Li-ion batteries and delivered a unique cell that can operate effectively at temperatures as low as -40oC, a battery that led to a joint patent submission amongst DUTH, CERTH and ESA.
MNTL along with the Center for Research and Technology (CERTH) and European Space Agency (ESA) submitted a patent (“Rechargeable Electrochemical Lithium Ion Cell”) to the Greek Patent Office (OBI).
The patent concerns the development of rechargeable lithium-ion cell with high energy that operates effectively at very low temperatures, as low as -40 Co .

Petros Selinis, MSc Student of MNTLab@Duth had the opportunity of an Informational/Educational Trip to Germany ( 6- 9 June, 2016) as a prize given to the young scientists that participated in the -award winning- SHELION Project. It is reminded that the SHELION Project was amongst the three projects that received honor during the Greek‐German Days on Research, Innovation & Young Scientists. Come and read below his experience of this educational trip:
Mr Dimiritris Argyropoulos, MSc Student of DUTh at MNTLab will participate at the 13th International Conference on Nanosciences & Nanotechnologies (NN16) that will be held in Porto Palace Conference Center during July, 5th to 8th , 2016 in Thessaloniki, Greece. His article/presentation, "Transparent Graphene Oxide and reduced Graphene Oxide Humidity Sensors", with co-authors: S. Papamatthaiou, F. Farmakis, N. Georgoulas will be hosted at the Workshop 5 that is related to “GRAPHENE AND RELATED MATERIALS, PROCESSES & APPLICATIONS”
Another MSc Duth Student, Mr Sotiris Papamatthaiou, working also his thesis at MNT Lab will participate to Eurosensors 2016 Conference with an article as poster presentation: “The Effect of Thermal Reduction and Film Thickness on Fast Response Transparent graphene Oxide Humidity Sensors”. The article is co-authored by: Sotiris Papamatthaiou, D.–P.Argyropoulos, F. Farmakis, A. Masurkar, K. Alexandrou, I. Kymissis, N. Georgoulas. The Conference will be held during September, 4-7, 2016 at Budapest, Hungary.
Assistant Professor, Filippos Farmakis, will present at the 11th European Space Power Conference supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) the very promising results of the Project “High Specific Energy Lithium Cells for Space Exploration”, an ESA TRPactivity (Contract No: 4000109879/13/NL/LvH).
The paper discusses the development of high specific energy Lithium-ion cells, capable of operating under low temperature conditions, i.e. -40oC. Such cells maybe encountered in future exploration missions, which do not consider the use of Radioisotope Heater Units.
